Tyre Repair & Vulcanization

Vulcanization – Heat Tyre Repair

Used tyres can be repaired in many ways. In most cases, repairs can be completed on-site while you wait. However, some types of damage require more advanced intervention — this is when tyre vulcanization is necessary.

Vulcanization is typically applied in cases such as:

  • Cracks extending through the full thickness of the tyre wall
  • Serious structural damage
  • Heavy-duty tyre injuries requiring permanent bonding

During the vulcanization process, the tyre is repaired using high temperature and pressure:

  • Temperature: approx. 150°C
  • Pressure: 0.5 – 0.8 MPa
  • Repair time depends on the material thickness and extent of damage

Using modern vulcanizing equipment and high-quality repair materials, our skilled technicians can restore even severely damaged tyres safely and reliably.

What Is Vulcanization?

Vulcanization is a physical and chemical process in which cross-links are formed between the long molecular chains of rubber (natural or synthetic). This process transforms soft, plastic rubber into a strong, elastic, and durable material.
In tyre manufacturing and repair, vulcanization refers to the operation where a raw or damaged rubber product is treated under controlled heat, pressure, and time in a vulcanizing machine, turning it into a fully cured rubber product.

How Does Vulcanization Work?

During vulcanization:

  • The rubber molecules form cross-linked bonds (a 3D network structure).
  • This “networking” prevents the chains from sliding apart under force.
  • When the force is removed, the rubber returns to its original shape thanks to its elasticity.

This is why vulcanized rubber becomes:

✔ Stronger
✔ More flexible
✔ Heat-resistant
✔ More durable

Why Heat and Time Are Needed

Rubber is a poor heat conductor, so it warms up slowly.
Because of this:

  • The material must be kept at high temperature long enough for the chemical reaction to complete.
  • Typical vulcanization temperatures are around 150°C or higher.
  • The required time depends on the thickness and type of rubber.

Using excessively high temperatures would speed up unwanted chemical reactions that could damage the rubber.

Industrial vs. Repair Vulcanization

In industrial tyre production, vulcanization is typically performed:

  • Around 150°C
  • Under high pressure (1.5–2 MPa)
  • Inside moulds that give the tyre its final shape

For tyre repair, specialized vulcanizing methods can restore even severe damage using controlled heat and pressure.

Why Vulcanization Matters in Tyre Repair

In professional tyre repair, vulcanization allows technicians to:

  • Permanently bond repair materials to the tyre
  • Restore structural strength
  • Extend the lifespan of damaged tyres

This makes it possible to safely repair damage that would otherwise require tyre replacement.
